Being a female MMM staff member (FMSM - yes it’s a real thing) is a bit like going shoe shopping (Yes ladies - you know what I’m talking about!) You see some shoes in a window and they look good and you think “Oh those shoes are gorgeous” and you think how nice they would look on you. Or perhaps you see them on someone else and you think “I have to have those shoes!” And when you get them, well sometimes they fit well and straight away you can walk for miles in them. Other times, there is a ‘breaking in’ period where they might not feel that comfortable but you know if you persevere then eventually they will mould to your feet and feel fantastic. Well here in Fiji, I have found that my ’shoes' border on sky high stilettos at times and jandals at others. I have shoes for teaching my three kids in their homeschooling and they make me into an encyclopedia of knowledge for learning about life (thank you Google!) I have chef shoes for preparing meals for teams of people, and shoes that help me to have a cheerful face to greet tired and sweaty workers at the end of the day. There are also housekeeping shoes that are perfect for doing the cleaning and washing for all the team and the family. I even have shoes that make me into a consultant giving out advice on what to avoid and what to look for in different environments. I have shoes that are very uncomfortable and take me places I never imagined I would go – like to a gib stopping workshop or to hardware stores where I feel very out of my depth. I have the very practical Mum shoes that are easy to run around in and have fun but are also no nonsense. I have shoes for a nurse complete with band aids and stomach cramp pills always on hand. There are shoes that are perfect for getting me ready to listen to people's stories and allow people to feel they can confide in me about issues in their lives. I also love my shoes that make me an Aunty to so many local children. The accountant shoes I am still wearing in but they are useful for doing books and balancing funds. I have my hospitality shoes that I wear when welcoming people into my home for a meal or a cup of tea with some kiwi baking - I find myself in those a lot! I have shoes as a communicator which keep the family and friends in the loop with what is happening in Fiji. I also have my favourite shoes as a wife supporting my husband to be what God has called him to be. The shoes are many and varied and some felt a bit awkward at first, but they all now fit perfectly. I am so grateful to a God who knows how much this girl loves her shoes!
